Let’s talk turkey …chickens rather

I am considering getting some baby chicks and raising them to be laying hens. I have never owned or cared for chickens before. I have been doing a bunch of research over the past few days and I have informed Mark that I expect him to build a small chicken coop and help take care of them while they’re little for a few weeks during the day while I am at work. Does anyone have experience with raising a small flock? I’d like to hear your trials and tribulations. It’s looking like I can get 4 chickens set up and running for under $50.

Make sure you get a year’s worth of chicken feed and design your cages with a water trough at the back with a slight incline front to back leading to a slot in the front to let the eggs roll out. Keep an adequate gap or separate the rooster from the hens because they have been known to impregnate hens through a chicken wire fence. Leave slots in the floor boards so you can hose the chicken shit out of it too. Also make sure you can get easy access under the coop so you can shovel up the chicken poop and put that in your compost.

As far as keeping them healthy, talk to your aunt Beth. I suspect she will be an expert on this topic. :)

Boy, that sounds just like the idea I had last spring that everyone told me was so terrible and talked me out of! I just kept hearing how much work it is, how much they stink, the noise they make, etc, etc, etc. I say go for it and you can tell me for real if it’s worth it :) Oh, and let me know the first time Radar get a hold of one. Panzer had a lot of fun with a duck he caught!
