Hyrolyzed Vegetable Protein (MSG) on FDA Recall List

Hyrolyzed Vegetable Protein  (HVP) or better known as MSG is contained in a variety of foods. The Food and Drug Administration is recalling HVP products containing paste or powder distributed by Basic Food Flavors, Inc.  This includes dips and dip mixes from McCormick and Great Value (Marzetti) commonly found in Walmarts. For a complete list, visit this FDA website: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/

The most interesting part of this is that Hyrolyzed Vegetable Protein including Hyrolyzed Soy Protein is just another term for Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). At the end of this posting I have included a list of common names for MSG that I suspect many people, like myself, did not realize was the case. Add to this the fact that MSG has many bad side effects most notably, causing obesity and you have a national health problem as a result.

“Glutamic acid is a neurotransmitter that excites our neurons (not just in our tongues). This electrical charging of neurons is what makes foods with added free glutamic acid taste so good. Unfortunately, the free glutamic acid can cause problems in many people. Actually, our brains have many receptors for glutamic acid and some areas, such as the hypothalamus, do not have an impermeable blood-brain barrier, so free glutamic acid from food sources can get into the brain, injuring and sometimes killing neurons. At least 25 per cent of the U.S. population react to free glutamic acid from food sources.”

“Exposed laboratory animals suffer brain lesions and neuroendocrine disorders. Scientists studying retinal degeneration in mice treated with free glutamic acid have noted that these mice also became grotesquely obese following administration of free glutamic acid. The vulnerable hypothalamus in our brains regulates weight control, as well as other endocrine functions.” http://www.advancedhealthplan.com/

I try to avoid foods with MSG and high density corn syrup in them as I think this combination of chemicals is one of the great contributors to the obesity problem confronting many Americans and Europeans.

“The glutamate industry is fully aware of the harmful effects of MSG, that it is a toxic substance. They know that ingesting their toxin can cause diabetes, adrenal gland malfunction, seizures, high blood pressure, excessive weight gain, stroke and other health problems. If you eat MSG and experience any of these conditions, then you need to immediately eliminate MSG from your diet.” http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/

As I stated earlier, there are many terms for MSG besides MSG: (from http://www.msgmyth.com/)

MSG
Monosodium glutamate
Monopotassium glutamate
Glutamate
Glutamic Acid
Vegetable Protein Extract

Gelatin
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)
Autolyzed Plant Protein

Calcium Caseinate
Textured Protein
Yeast Extract
Yeast food or nutrient
Autolyzed Yeast

So hurray for the FDA on recalling these products for the sake of the public health. I recommend in all your future food buys you read the labels of all processed foods and see if they contain any of the pseudonyms for MSG. Your waistline will thank you.
